Tuesday 12-13-11 Journalistic style writing (quickwrite)

My Dangerous Story

When I was at the midnight premiere for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 at the Edwards cinema theatre in Calabassas, with my older brother, his girlfriend, and my older sister, a couple of girls approached us. They had butterbeer cupcakes. Let me explain what butterbeer is. Butter beer is a non-alcoholic beverage from Harry Potter, that is also fictional. So I took one of the cupcakes since they were offering us, and ate a small portion of it. After I ate a very little bit of it, I realized that what I did could really hurt me. Those cupcakes could've had drugs in them, or a potential killer poison. The whole night I was so worried that I would have to go to the E.R. There was nothing wrong with me, but that night I reinforced a common rule I had forgotten. Never take things from strangers!

Young Girl Gets In Delivery Truck Crash!

Six year old Morgan Barton was with her father and sister, when a potentially deadly accident unfolded beneath her very eyes. Morgan's father worked as a delivery truck driver in Coosbay Oregon. On that night, her father left the truck to go and deliver something;leaving Morgan and her little sister alone in the truck. Being the curious girl that she was, Miss Barton started fiddling around with the gears. When she pushed on one of the gears, she started"Rolling down a hill, headed in to a hedge of trees," Morgan stated. After her and her sister had crashed, thankfully no one was hurt. But as for the delivery truck, well there wasn't any point in repairing it.

Thursday 12-1-11 paraphrasing and pledge quickwrite

Quick write
I promise to be the ally of the United State's flag. I also pledge to the republic, and our single nation, under the lord, which can't be separated. All of that with pride for our country and justice for everyone.

Paraphrasing
Bugs Bunny is a human like grey rabbit. He was created in 1938 and he is care free, a joker, and is sarcastic. Above all of the other cartoon characters in the world, he has been in the most movies. His film personality is ranked ninth in the world. When Bugs hit sheer stardom, he became the representative character of the company Warner Brothers. For the past 73 years that Bugs Bunny has been in action, he has always had a special part in our hearts.

A company named NRDC has done a study about video game electricity usage, and came to a conclusion that in a year, video games use the same amount of electricity  as the town of San Diego in California. To reduce this waste of electricity, and save approximately one billion dollars, it is advised to use less of your video game consoles a week. Not only will this save money, but it will also reduce CO2 and generally make the planet cleaner. Two gaming consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation, left on for 24 hours, for a term of 7 days will waste as much as two new refrigerators. So the next time you play video games, take in to consideration how much you are costing the planet.

Wednesday 11-230-11 Why would you do such a thing?(quickwrite)

A lot of the times, you have to have good judgment when believing things on the internet. A lot of people on the internet post things just for their amusement, or other times for much more dangerous things. I think that people would post stupid things on the internet for just a laugh, or for their own benefit of saying "look at these people who believe this bogus!". Other times, people post things on the internet that change their appearence, or personality traits about them. I think they do this because they are either insecure, or are trying to impress or fit in with people. I don't necessarily agree with this though because people can trust someone that they don't even know. And at times this can be very dangerous. And lastly when people post things about trying to get money for a fake organization, or other scams, I think it's just for them to steal your money, and keep a realistic looking front. This is definitely dangerous, and you should do your research before trusting something on the internet. Before you know it you could be sending thousands of dollars away to an "Alpaca in Africa" foundation. All of these are examples of people either being stupid, or just plain right scam artists.

Tuesday 11-29-11 Is it Reliable?

1. Bolierplate- It's Fake because although it goes into much detail, another website stated that it was fake. Also robots aren't even mentioned in history books as being developed back then.

2. Dog Island- It's fake because there is no real information on the site about prices or other things. The price is said to be free, funded by rich people with big hearts. I don't think rich people would fund a dog island...

3.Havidol- It's fake because the side effects are totally bogus! (Terminal smile, inter species communication)

4. RYT- It's totally fake, because their partnerships are faulty. (Only 12 minutes of sleep with Rivitalex/ Yeah I don't think so ...)

5.Furnetics- It's fake because Wikifur said it was a hoax, so I'm assuming it is. (This one was tricky)

6.Dihydrogen Monoxide- It's fake because it's just a not commonly known way of saying water. Though  people might think it is dangerous for the "monoxide" part.

7.Pacific Tree Octopus- It's obviously fake because Octopi don't live on trees, and they can't live without water. Think people think!

8.Beautiful Money- I believe that it is real because we looked it up and it is said that it is money for Antarctica, but it is not to be traded for value.

9.Mankato-  I believe that it is real because there are pictures and maps of Mankato. Also there is a picture of President Bush fishing there!( That will have to be further examined though...)

10. Kresky- Funny website, but it's a fake. If you look up popular shows in the 70's, Kresky is not up there. Also it is a known hoax. If you don't recognize Kresky, it's because it didn't exist.

We should have a gullibility meter in our brain. If only if only.

Wednesday 11-23-11 Giving Thanks (Quickwrite)

On different times, I've helped my mom cook diner and clean up. But one time she came home from work really tired, so I decided that that would be the nicest thing to do for her. It felt really good because I knew that she really appreciated it. If I had just sat on the couch and lazed around, I would probably feel really guilty. I think it feels better to help someone rather than having someone do something for you. I think this because you feel happy and good. As far as being lazy, I have those days but overall helping out is the greatest gift/reward you can earn. Especially when that someone says thank you.

Tuesday 11-22-11 Rumors(quickwrite) & sentences

Quickwrite
Rumor that I believe:
I believe in a rumor that says that Kim Kardashian only married Kris Humphries for her show, and money. It makes sense because she endorsed a lot of brands on the wedding episode, and I'm sure that a lot of things for her wedding came provided free of cost. The particular episode would get a lot of people to watch it, therefore viewings would go up, which means more money. So I basically think that it was all a big publicity stunt

Rumor that I don't believe:
I heard a rumor from someone that a teacher in this school has a voodoo doll on her desk. Apparently that teacher also casts "hexes" and "curses" on the students she doesn't like. This seems very unbelievable, because curses and hexes are all mumbo jumbo things. I think that anyone that would believe that wouldn't be the brightest bulb in the tanning bed.

Active vs Passive voice
Active: the subject of the sentence is doing the verb
Passive: The subject is having the verb done to it

Mr.McCabe's Character Friday 10/28/11

Mr.McCabe is a creative person because he is always coming up with new teaching ways, and everyday we have an interesting quick write .

Mr.McCabe is a laid back person  because he says to never panic, and takes things easy.

Mr.McCabe is a violent person because he likes to kill bus loads of orphans and nuns.

Character Assertion Graphic Organizer

William is a mean person. I know he's mean because  he always bullies Margot. That's mean because Margot  is a very shy and quiet person. Also, bullying is a harsh form of violence. I know he's mean because he also locks Margot in the closet when the sun comes out. That's mean  because he knows that Margot loves the sun, and hates the rain, so he intentionally locked her in there to prevent her from being happy.

Margot is a reserved person. I know she's reserved because she lets people push her around. That's reserved because she doesn't stand up for herself. I know she's reserved because people mock her, and she just soaks it all up. That's reserved because she is keeping all her emotions bottled up, and she's letting people constantly tease her.

The meanest thing I've ever done Thursday 10/27/11

I honestly can't remember the meanest thing I've ever done, but I do remember something that I did that was pretty mean. I'm sure that this wasn't the worst I did, but it still did some damage. I stole my brother's IPhone headphones, and put it in a file cabinet at my dad's office. I was going to give them back to him before we left, but I eventually forgot.A day later, I remembered and my brother got super mad at me. I felt happy but guilty at the same time. I don't regret it now, because he still does mean things to me, so it's my mild form of revenge. Just saying, he better watch out...

Wednesday To Have something once, or not have it at all 10/26/11

I think that I would prefer to not have that ting at all.If you had something great for one day or less, after that day you would want that thing badly. But if you didn't have that thing at all, you wouldn't miss it, and you wouldn't compare other good things to it. On the other hand, if you had that one great thing for how ever much period of time, you would take away that experience with you, and have a lasing memory from it.All in all, you would definitely have an easier life without wanting that good thing again. But if I were to be able to have one good thing for a day, it would probably be to have extremely good, (I'm talking world renowned) food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, for that one day. If only, if only...

Raining All the Time Tuesday 10/25/11

If it never stopped raining, I would try to come up with a way for people to have waterproof skin. This would make it easy for people to get around, without the hassle of carrying an umbrella, or wearing raincoats. When the rain would hit your skin, it would slide down and your skin would be left dry. As for taking showers, you would be able to switch off a button which allows your skin to become water absorbent again. But if my invention failed, I would probably be really depressed, and would have to cope with the rain. And just from an assumption, I hope it's not acid rain because we would obviously all die. That wouldn't be much fun.

Waiting Monday 10/24/11

I'm waiting to get the new Kindle. I've wanted it for over a year now, and hope that i will soon get it for Christmas. I think that the Kindle fits my lifestyle. I love to read, so it would be easier for me to just get books instantly , rather than having to travel to the bookstore, or library. Also the Kindle has a new feature where you can rent ebooks on you r Kindle. You don't have to worry about fines or anything else. My parents said that if they get it for me for Christmas, then i would have to stop talking about it. It took half of the year to convince them to get me one. But until Christmas, sooner or later, I'm still waiting.

Tuesday Protagonist of a Story 10/18/11

If I were to be in a movie it would be an action packed film. I would definitely change a lot about myself. For example, I would be flexible so I could get in and out of places fast and easy. I wouldn't be afraid of anything except losing the people I love. I would also have the ability to come up with brilliantly plotted plans in the split of a second. And I would acquire a fox as a pet. Things that would stay the same would be my personality, style, and sometimes clumsiness. I also would keep my family and friends the same.

Job VS. School Friday 10/14/11 quickwrite

        Like A Job
  • It's like a job because you can get "fired". In school you either get expelled or suspended for inappropriate behavior, or any other action that isn't right. In a work environment you get fired.
  • In school you have work, exactly like a job.
  • They also share a similarity with someone being in charge. In school its the principal, and the deans, and so on. For a job, it's a manager, a general manager, etc.
        Different from a job
  • In a job you don't have to keep switching classes every hour.
  • They don't pay you for going to school.
  • You get to choose your hours at work , to see when you will be coming in. At school you are expected to be their everyday, and unless you are sick or any other big thing, there is no excuse.

My life Metaphor+simile wednesday 10/12/11

My life is like a goldfish in a bowl. Everyday I go around the bowl, doing my same routine. I haven't explored anything bigger yet so basically my life is just the same thing over and over again. But sometimes I get a change in fish flakes, which is for the better, but sometimes those fish flakes are bad for me.One day I know that I will leave this fishbowl I live in, and go explore the ocean.

Best Friend Quickwrite Friday 10/7/11

My best friend is a very down to earth person. She loves to read and go hiking. We love talking about things like surfing and how we want to get typewriters for christmas. She likes old fashioned things and to help people. Even though we only have one class together, we still make the effort to see each other at lunch and nutrition. A strength that she has is that she is creative. If I can't come up with a good idea, she is always there to come up with a brilliant plan. A weakness that she has is that she tends to brag about things without realizing she is doing it. But overall, she's my best friend and I wouldn't change anything about her.

Fantasy Conversation Thursday Quickwrite 10/06/11

"Hello!", I exclaimed to the Purple fox."Good afternoon," the Fox replied." I was just wondering if you would like to come over for tea today," I inquired. The fox had a look of doubt on his face."I would be delighted to, except that the Unicorn that lives next to Mr.Possum is expecting me over for a game of twister," he said." If you wish you can accompany me", he replied. "That would be lovely! And then afterwards, we could go and bake cupcakes with Mrs.Rabbit", I stated. The Purple fox now was a shade of bright orange!"Sounds like a supercalifragalisticexpealidocious plan!," he exclaimed.Off I went with that magical purple fox to play Twister with a Unicorn, and bake cupcakes with Mrs.Rabbit.

Following directions Quickwrite Tuesday 10/4/11

How good are you with following directions? How important is it?

I would say that I am good with following directions. But sometimes I forget to look at them because I rush. I think it's really important to follow directions. If you do the work but don't read the directions, you waste your time doing the wrong thing. Also, you should listen to the person giving instructions. It could be directions for something really important, like defusing a bomb, or something not as important, like coloring a picture. Regardless, it's always important to follow directions.

The blame game 9/30/11

It was the Kobra's fault for having Monk shoved in the locker. "Who's your leader wimp?" He's so amazed he tells her" Monk Klutter". This proves that it's the Kobra's fault because he leads Priscilla to Monk. "His hands never quite make it to Melvin. In move of pure poetry Priscilla has Monk in a hemmerlock". This explains it because Monk was going  to hurt Melvin, but before he could even lay a finger on him Priscilla has Monk in a hammerlock position and is going to shove him in the locker. All of these events lead me to believe that is was the Kobra's fault.

Blaming Quickwrite 9/30/11

Tell me about a time where you were blamed for something that wasn't your fault.

My older sister likes to blame me for things all the time. Once she blamed me for taking one of her shirts and wearing it! I hadn't even gone in her room all of that day. Even though I kept explaining to her that I hadn't taken anything, she just wouldn't give up. Then finally she looked for her shirt and found it. She owed me a big apology.

Bullying at Hale Quickwrite 9/28/11

Tell me about bullying at Hale. If you were in charge, what would you do about it?

There is all forms of bullying at Hale. One form that I constantly see is girls and boys, talking about eachother behind other people's backs. This is sad to see because, instead of coming up to that person and confronting them, they just talk trash about them. Another type of bullying I see at Hale is people picking on other kids. They make comments to that person, and that kid gets angry and starts to pick a fight. If I were in charge I would open up an afterschool classroom for kids who were bullied. This would help them see that they aren't alone. They would get to discuss their feelings, and talk with others. So when it's time to come home, they don't have to feel bad anymore. And as for those bullies, they would have to pick up trash around the campus, help clean teacher's rooms, and if they were really bad, that would be an automatic suspension.

My A+ life, my C life, and my F life Quickwrite

A+ life:
I would wake up beside my boyfriend and go to make breakfast in my gorgeous loft in New York. I would eat my breakfast checking news on my latest gadgets and would be out the door. I take a taxi to my job as a successful writer. I would take a taxi back to my loft where I would make dinner, and then go to bed. I would make a lot of money a year, so I wouldn't have to worry about rent or taxes.

C life:
I would wake up in my apartment in West Hills. I then would go make breakfast and go to my job as a secretary for a newspaper company. Then I would drive back to my apartment in my old Toyota Corolla, and eat my dinner while watching t.v and after go to bed.I would make minimum wage salary, and would just scrape by.

F life:
I would wake up on the cold streets of L.A. I would then walk to dig through the trash cans to find some food for my breakfast. I would eat the garbage I found, while walking to my usual street corner to beg for money. After holding an empty Starbucks cup I found for money, I would walk around and look through the trash cans again for my dinner. I would then bundle up my raggedy blankets and go to sleep.

Quickwrite Wearing a Raincoat

Is the song wearing a raincoat pro-drugs or anti-drugs? What part of the song makes you so sure?

I think that the song "Wearing a raincoat" is anti -drugs. I think this because the lyric "turning to drugs to help you sleep will only lead to sleep", is like saying taking drugs will only ruin your life, it won't do anything else for you. Drugs will ruin your life.

55 word story

"One Last Call " - Sara Shahnazi

A loud noise surrounds the city, and suddenly smoke and ash fill the air. A thick layer of questions concerns everyone. Fire trucks roar and people scream and run. Carla looks outside of her office building and sees a skyscraper turned to rubble. She then remembered her husband calling her earlier, and now sees him being carried away.

( Actually 58 words)

If you could have anything in the world... Quickwrite

What do you want more than anything else in the world? Who or what is keeping you from getting it?

Instead of wanting something like an ipod or a computer, what I want more than anything else in the world is for the environment to be saved. For example, if the environment was saved, the animals in the world wouldn't have to worry about going extinct, or losing their home. Not only cutting down trees kills the environment and hurts animals, things like pollution cause global warming, and hurt us too. I think we need to pay attention to the animals, and nature because before we had technology that was all we had. I guess the world is stopping me from getting this because of all the pollution and waste from everyone. If everyone did their part, we wouldn't have to be concerned about Polar Bears going extinct, or glaciers melting.

Quick Write there, their ,and they're

I made this assignment into a story!

The possums are on their way to the Skylight Treehouse Restaurant. Suddenly the baby possum wasn't there with them anymore! They're very frightened and worried about little Alfie. They search the neighborhood, and find him all the way beyond their reach on a rooftop. They try to climb a ladder, but they're too short to reach the roof. Suddnely the mommy possum spots Mayor Raccoon in their car! "Mayor Raccoon what are you doing there?", exclaimed daddy possum."There has been a report that Alfie the baby possum is on a roof!",shouted Mayor Raccoon. " But why are you in their car?", asked Vanessa the bat. " I was in a rush to get here, so I jumped in their car to get her quickly.", explained Mayor Raccoon. " There is too much arguing! Just please get my Alfie down!", proclaimed mommy possum. So Mayor Raccoon called the firebugs to get Alfie down from there. "They're coming soon", said mommy possum. "Hopefully they're experienced in getting down possums on roofs.", joked Mayor Raccoon. When the firebugs came, they got Alfie down and they're all relieved to have their fuzzy little baby back.

Favorite Fairytale Quickwrite 9/20/11

What is your favorite fairy tale? Why do you like it? What would you change about the story to make it better?

My favorite fairy tale is "The Three Little Pigs". I like it because there are three really cute short pigs, who are building houses. HOW COULD YOU NOT FIND THAT CUTE? It also teaches a valuable lesson. The lesson is to not be lazy, and that if you put that extra effort, you won't be let down. Or in this case, blown down. I also especially love the ending when the wolf crawls through the last pig's chimney and gets made into soup. Karma! It could be even better if the pigs had more personality and description to them. I love this story otherwise!

Pigs are my homies <3

Quick Write 9/15/11

"Propose a new classroom rule. How would that affect: you, other students, and Mr.McCabe."

I propose that we play a version of musical chairs around our pods each day. For instance, when we come in to the classroom we would go by our pod's chairs and Mr.McCabe would play half of a one minute song. We would go around our desks until the music stopped and then we would sit in the chair closest to us.It would be fun for me, and other students would get to sit around in different seats. It wouldn't be around the room because that would be too hectic, but just around the pods so that Mr.McCabe wouldn't forget our names.

Quick Write 9/14/11

This quick write was about boys being smarter than girls or girls being smarter than boys.

"I think that girls are smarter. The reason is that girls think things through and are more self motivated. They are willing to come up with reasons for doing things, and think more maturely. It's not that boys aren't smart, it's just that their way of thinking and doing things aren't as motivated. It makes me feel proud to be a girl, but in the end I think it's fair to say that girls and boys are equal. There are many different men and women in the world that have accomplished many things, and have made breakthroughs, and all in all they have achieved it through hard work and patience."

Quick Write 9/12/11

This is the quick write from class today!

"Around me I see... a ton of kids, drawings on the white boards, cool Mr.McCabe, and so much more! There is a copied painting of Vincent Van Gogh's "A Starry Night", and a picture of something that looks like an eye chart, but actually says "this is not an eye chart". There is a clock that reads 12:08, and a computer with a screensaver of two black airplanes.I also see two yellow vests hanging on a podium where Mr.McCabe stands. There is also a bookshelf with books and a bowling pin on top.But out of all of those things, I see what is going to be a great year!
